QCTO Certificate Truck Driver (NQF 3)

SAQA QUAL ID: 93793 (Credits 130 NQF LVL 3)

This qualification is made up of the 3 compulsory modules. The course duration is 12 months and focuses on 3 areas, Knowledge module (theory based), Practical skill modules and Workplace based modules. The qualification is an alternate to TETA’s qualification. This qualification consists of quarterly written assessments and a final exam at year end.

Course Overview

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Truck Driver. Truck drivers operate trucks with a GVM in excess of 3,500 kilograms and to ensure the safe transportation of cargo from point of departure to point of arrival.

A qualified learner will be able to:

• Plan and prepare a truck for transportation.
• Operate a truck.
• Maintain operational documents and records

This qualification is made up of the following compulsory Knowledge/Theory and Practical Skill Modules:

UNIT 1: KNOWLEDGE BASED MODULE

1.1 Health, Safety, Quality and Legislation

PURPOSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE MODULES

The main focus of learning in this knowledge module is to build an understanding of health, safety, quality and legislative theory required for the practice of a truck driver.

The module will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of:

• Theories and principles of relevant legislation, (Including Transportation of Dangerous Goods) regulations, codes and by-laws (40%)
• Concepts, theories and principles of first aid (20%)
• Concepts, theories and principles of firefighting (20%)
• Theories, concepts and principles of quality control in transportation (20%)

1.2 Environment, Energy Efficiency and Ethics

PURPOSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE MODULES

The main focus of learning in this knowledge module is to develop an understanding within the learner of the importance of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency factors impacting on undertaking business operations and processes in an environmentally sustainable and responsible manner. The learner will also be exposed to the concept and practices with regard to ethics in order for them to be able to interpret ethical and nonethical behaviour and practices.

The module will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of:

• Theories and principles of relevant environmental sustainability requirements (40%)
• Concepts, theories and principles of energy efficiency (40%)
• Theories, concepts and principles of ethics (20%)
• Knowledge of AARTO

1.3 Industry Contexts

The main focus of learning in this knowledge module is to build an understanding of the way in which the truck driver functions within the road transport industry.

The module will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of:

• Introduction to the Transportation industry (100%)

1.4 Business Essentials

PURPOSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE MODULES

The main focus of learning in this knowledge module is to build an understanding of the transport industry.

The module will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of:

• Basic Business Principles (25%)
• Communication (25%)
• Customer Relations (25%)
• Maps and Applied Science (25%)

1.5 Transport Risk

PURPOSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE MODULES

The main focus of learning in this knowledge module is to build an understanding of various emergencies which may occur.

The module will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of:

• Incidents and accidents (25%)
• KM-05-KT02: Hi-jacking awareness (25%)
• Load Loss or spillage (25%)
• Quality and the environment (25%)

1.6 Operating a truck

PURPOSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE MODULES

The main focus of learning in this knowledge module is to build an understanding of the road transport industry.

The module will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of:

• Concepts, theories and principles of driving techniques (25%)
• Trip/Journey Management (25%)
• Vehicle roadworthiness and pre/post-trip inspection procedures (25%)
• Theories and principles of Load Securement (25%)

UNIT 2: PRACTICAL SKILL MODULE

2.1 Prepare truck for loading, offloading and transportation

PURPOSE OF THE PRACTICAL SKILL MODULES

The focus of learning in this module is on providing the learner an opportunity to practice truck driving skills within a simulated work environment. The learners will be practicing skills related to prepare a vehicle for loading, transport and offloading as well as interpret relevant documentation.

The learner will be required to:

• Prepare truck for loading
• Prepare truck for offloading
• Prepare truck for transportation
• Secure the load

2.2 Operate a truck

PURPOSE OF THE PRACTICAL SKILL MODULES

The focus of learning in this module is on providing the learner an opportunity to practice operating truck skills within a simulated work environment. The learners will be practicing skills related to operating a truck.

The learner will be required to:

• Start up a truck
• Drive a truck
• Shut down a truck

2.3 Inspect vehicles and complete inspection reports

PURPOSE OF THE PRACTICAL SKILL MODULES

The focus of learning in this module is on providing the learner an opportunity to practice operating truck skills within a simulated work environment. The learners will be practicing skills related to inspecting vehicles and completing.

The learner will be required to:

• Conduct vehicle/combination inspection
• Complete vehicle check list
• Collate documentation

2.4 Work with electrical components

PURPOSE OF THE PRACTICAL SKILL MODULES

The focus of learning in this module is on providing the learner an opportunity to become familiar with electrical diagrams, components, circuits, testing and measuring instruments and develop the skills and knowledge to use and care for them.

The learner will be required to:

• Read and interpret electrical diagrams
• Identify and care for electrical equipment
• Identify and use portable testing and measuring instruments
• Identify and use fixed measuring instruments
• Identify and care for protective devices

UNIT 3: WORK EXPERIENCE MODULE

3.1 Planning for transportation of cargo

PURPOSE OF THE WORK EXPERIENCE MODULES

Gain exposure to work as part of a transportation team in planning and preparing of a truck in a transportation environment. The Learner will be required to complete each Work Place Experience for a minimum period of 5 days.

The learner will be required to:

• Obtain loading documentation
• Apply safety standard operating procedures

3.2 Complying to road traffic regulation

PURPOSE OF THE WORK EXPERIENCE MODULES

Gain exposure to work as part of a transportation team in observing road regulations. The Learner will be required to complete each Work Experience for a minimum period of 5 days.

The learner will be required to:

• Comply with all national road legislation
• Conduct a vehicle check

3.3 Documentation and reporting procedures and processes

PURPOSE OF THE WORK EXPERIENCE MODULES

The focus of the work experience is on providing the learner an opportunity to: Gain exposure to work as part of a transportation team in operating vehicle. The Learner will be required to complete each Work Experience for a minimum period of 5 days.

The learner will be required to:

• Source and collate documents
• Store documents
