This skills programme is made up of 2 compulsory modules. The course duration is 3 days and focuses on 3 areas, a knowledge-based module, a Practical Skill module and a Final
Integrated Summative Assessment. The Skills Programme is an alternative to HWSETA's and TETA's Unit Standards.
Course Overview
This programme equips learners with intermediate first aid knowledge and practical techniques to provide enhanced emergency medical care. Intermediate First Aid Responders
handle more complex medical emergencies, ensuring scene safety, performing critical interventions, and supporting professional emergency medical personnel.
Participants will learn to operate within an expanded scope of practice, utilizing a wider range of first aid techniques and equipment, while adhering to legal and regulatory
requirements.
Course Includes:
- Day 1: Theory and In-Class Assessments
- 08:00 am – 16:00 pm (x3 15-minute breaks included)
- Day 2: Theory and In Class Assessments
- 08:00 am – 16:00 pm (x3 15-minute breaks included)
- Day 3: Practical’s
- 08:00 am – 16:00 pm (x3 15-minute breaks included)
- Once all theory has been completed, Learners are taken outside with one facilitator to complete the Practical Evaluation
- Final Examination to be held from 09:00 am – 11 am the following day
- Classes are subject to a maximum of 12 – 15 learners per facilitator
A qualified learner will be able to:
- Conduct detailed patient assessments and manage incident scene safety.
- Apply intermediate first aid techniques for trauma and medical emergencies.
- Perform CPR & AED use on adults, children, and infants.
- Manage shock, fractures, burns, wounds, and environmental emergencies.
- Recognize and respond to medical emergencies, including heart attacks, strokes, poisoning, and diabetic emergencies.
- Effectively hand over patients to emergency medical personnel with proper documentation and verbal reporting.
- Conduct post-incident clean-up and follow proper infection control procedures.

PURPOSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE MODULES
The purpose of this knowledge module is to equip learners with a basic operational understanding of the key concepts and principles that underpin the tasks performed by a basic emergency first aider.
The module will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of:
- Principles of providing intermediate emergency first aid.
- Effective application of intermediate emergency first aid.
- Basic human anatomy and physiology for intermediate emergency first aid.
- Recognise emergencies, injuries, and illnesses, and treat appropriately using intermediate emergency first aid techniques.
Principles of providing intermediate emergency first aid:
- The purpose of Intermediate Emergency First Aid
- The importance of airway, breathing, and circulation in intermediate emergency first aid
- The role and scope of work for an Emergency First Aid Responder
- Fundamental legal and ethical principles for providing intermediate emergency first aid.
- Maintaining personal health and safety as first aider and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Effective application of intermediate emergency first aid:
- Safety as the first priority of any Intermediate Emergency First Aider. Range:
Safety of the scene, themselves, the patient, and any bystanders.
- Assessment of the patient's condition for effective intermediate emergency first aid.
- Communication with bystanders, emergency services, and the patient in an emergency situation.
- Decision making and actions appropriate to provide intermediate first aid.
- Effective reassessment and monitoring of the patient's condition.
- Effective handover between Emergency First Aiders and emergency medical services.
- Record keeping and incident reporting according to standard procedures.
- Post incident scene/environment clean-up.
Basic human anatomy and physiology for intermediate emergency first aid:

Recognise emergencies, injuries, and illnesses, and treat appropriately using intermediate emergency first aid techniques:
- Primary assessment and treating as per findings. Range: lifesaving threatening conditions and provide life-saving treatments.
- Secondary assessment and treatment as per findings. Range: history, head to toe examination, vital signs including pulse.
- Control bleeding: Range: catastrophic bleeding, identify wounds, and treat appropriately.
- Manage a patient who is not breathing: Range: a choking patient and perform CPR if indicated, for adult, child, infant, including use of AED.
- Manage an unconscious patient
- Identify and manage shock: Range: failure to pump, loss of fluid, dilation of blood vessels, and treat.
- Manage head and spinal injuries
- Manage chest injuries. Range: Sucking chest wound and flail chest.
- Manage abdominal injuries. Range: Bowel evisceration.
- Manage pelvic injuries. Range: Splint unstable pelvis
- Manage extremity trauma. Range: Treat and immobilise fractures.
- Manage burns.
- Cardiac arrest or heart attack.
- Stroke.
- Anaphylaxis.
- Diabetic emergency.
- Seizure
- Thermal stress: Range: Hyper and hypo thermia
- Water emergencies: Range: Drowning.

PURPOSE OF THE PRACTICAL SKILL MODULES
The purpose of the practical skills module is to equip learners with hands-on abilities, competence and techniques for intermediate first aid providers required for real-life emergency situations.
The learner will be required to:
Provide intermediate emergency first aid for a variety of medical, trauma and environmental emergencies.
- Assess and manage an emergency scene for safety. Range: Hazards, primary and secondary surveys, respond appropriately
- Assess and manage bleeding, wounds, and burns.
- Assess and manage patients with breathing difficulties: Range: Treatment of choking
- Assess and manage a patient who is not breathing: Range: Perform CPR if indicated, for adult, child, and infant, including use of AED
- Assess and manage unconsciousness, and place patients in the recovery position
- Assess and manage traumatic injuries: Range: Fractures, head and spinal, chest injuries, abdominal injuries, or shock.
- Identify and manage medical emergencies: Range: Cardiac emergency, stroke, anaphylaxis, diabetic emergency, seizure, asthma attack
