This qualification is made up of the 3 compulsory modules. The course duration is 12 months and focuses on 3 areas, Knowledge module (theory based), Practical skill modules and Workplace based modules. The qualification is an alternate to TETA’s qualification. The duration of this qualification is 12 months, consisting of quarterly written assessments and a final exam at year end.

Course Overview

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate effectively as a Transport Clerk. Transport Clerks manage and coordinate the logistics of transporting goods, ensuring the efficient and accurate handling of shipping documentation, scheduling, and communication between various stakeholders. They play a critical role in facilitating the smooth movement of cargo from the point of departure to the point of arrival, while adhering to regulatory requirements and optimizing transportation processes.

A qualified learner will be able to:

• Plan and prepare transportation logistics
• Manage shipping documentation
• Coordinate communication between stakeholders

This qualification is made up of the following compulsory Knowledge/Theory and Practical Skill Modules:

UNIT 1: KNOWLEDGE BASED MODULE

1.1 Health, Safety, Quality and Legislation

PURPOSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE MODULES

The main focus of the learning in this knowledge module is to build an understanding of the health, safety, quality and legislative theory required for the practice of transport coordination.

The module will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of:

• Theories and principles of relevant legislation, regulations, codes and by-laws (30%)
• Concepts, theories and principles of first aid (10%)
• Theories, concepts and principles of quality control in transportation (25%)
• Concepts, theories and principles of firefighting (25%)
• Theories and principles of HIV and Aids (10%)

1.2 Environment, Energy Efficiency and Ethics

PURPOSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE MODULES

The main focus of the learning in this knowledge module is to develop an understanding within the learner of the importance of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency factors impacting on undertaking business operations and processes in an environmentally sustainable and responsible manner. The learner will also be exposed to the concept and practices with regard to ethics in order for them to be able to interpret ethical and nonethical behaviour and practices.

The module will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of:

• Theories and principles of relevant environmental sustainability requirements (40%)
• Concepts, theories and principles of energy efficiency (30%)
• Theories, concepts and principles of ethics (30%)

1.3 Industry Contexts

PURPOSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE MODULES

The main focus of the learning in this knowledge module is to build an understanding of the way in which the transport industry functions, the structure of the industry and issues of ethics within the transport industry.

The module will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of:

• Introduction to the Transportation industry (100%)

1.4 Business Essentials

PURPOSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE MODULES

The main focus of the learning in this knowledge module is to ensure an understanding of the various business essentials.

The module will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of:

• Basic Business Principles (25%)
• Communication (25%)
• Customer Relations (25%)
• Maps and Applied Science (25%)

1.5 Transport Risk

PURPOSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE MODULES

The main focus of the learning in this knowledge module is to build an understanding of the various emergencies which may occur.

The module will enable learners to demonstrate an understanding of:

• Incidents and accidents (50%)
• Medical Emergency (50%)

UNIT 2: PRACTICAL SKILL MODULE

PURPOSE OF THE PRACTICAL SKILL MODULES

The focus of the learning in this module is on providing the learner an opportunity to practice and display the planning and preparing of transport schedules within a simulated work environment. The learners will be practicing skills related to the Transport Environment in any given scenario.

The learner will be required to:

• Conduct preparatory activities
• Interpret customer needs and specifications
• Prepare operational documents

2.2 Co-ordinate the Allocation of Drivers to Vehicles and Confirm Preinspection Reports

PURPOSE OF THE PRACTICAL SKILL MODULES

The focus of learning in this module is on providing the learner an opportunity to practice operating truck skills within a simulated work environment. The learners will be practicing skills related to operating a truck.

The learner will be required to:

• Coordinate and allocate drivers and vehicles
• Confirm pre-inspection reports

2.3 Allocate Inspectors/Regulators/Point Dispatchers to Points and Compile Inspections/Monitoring Sheets and Reports

PURPOSE OF THE PRACTICAL SKILL MODULES

The focus of the learning in this module is on providing the learner an opportunity to practice and display transport management skills within a simulated work environment. The learners will be practicing transport Inspections/point dispatcher’s skills related to the Transport Environment used in any given scenario.

The learner will be required to:

• Allocate inspectors/regulators/point dispatchers to points to compile inspections / monitoring sheets and reports
• Compile Transportation Administrative Reports

UNIT 3: WORK EXPERIENCE MODULE

3.1 Developing Transport Schedules

PURPOSE OF THE WORK EXPERIENCE MODULES

The focus of the work experience is on providing the learner an opportunity to: Gain exposure to work as part of a team in developing a transport schedule within a real-life transport environment. The Learner will be required to complete each work experience at least four (2) times for a minimum period of 3 weeks.

The learner will be required to:

• Observe and assist an experienced transport scheduler develop a transport schedule
• Prepare and develop a transport schedule
• Autonomously prepare and develop a transport schedule

3.2 Assigning of Driver Schedules and Collation of Trip Documentation

PURPOSE OF THE WORK EXPERIENCE MODULES

Gain exposure to work as part of a transportation team in observing road regulations. The Learner will be required to complete each Work Experience for a minimum period of 5 days.

The learner will be required to:

• Allocate drivers to vehicles
• Collate trip documentation

3.3 Monitoring Trips and Conduct Route Allocation Inspections

PURPOSE OF THE WORK EXPERIENCE MODULES

The focus of the work experience is on providing the learner an opportunity to gain exposure to work as part of team in developing a transport schedule within a real-life transport environment. The Learner will be required to complete each work experience at least four (4) times for a minimum period of 5 weeks.

The learner will be required to:

• Monitor the arrival and departure times
• Compiling a report on all anomalies

There are currently no qualifications which provide for any direct horizontal, diagonal or vertical articulation with this qualification.
