This course is accredited with the Transport Education Training Authority and covers Unit Standard “242990” NQF level 4, 4 Credits

All training programs are Outcome Based and are assessed according to various Unit Standards and Outcomes

Assessment criteria consists of a Formative Assessment, In-Class Assessments, Summative Assessment and Practical Assessments

Course Overview

  • The use of Dangerous Goods, i.e. Chemicals, has increased significantly over the years which in turn has increased the risks to Humans and the Natural Environment
    • Adhere to standard operating procedures and applicable requirements of South African National Standards 10231 for the loading/unloading of packaged goods and bulk
    • Relevant procedure for the loading/unloading of packaged and/or bulk is identified for the various types of transport
    • The standard operating procedures for the loading/unloading of packed goods and bulk are explained and described as per South African National Standards requirements
    • Identify required danger warning diamond, warning placards, TREM cards and dangerous goods declaration
    • The relevant documentation is obtained and verified according to South African National Standards codes of practice, International Maritime Dangerous Goods and International Civil Aviation Organization codes, and national legislation
    • Relevant placards for packaged goods and bulk are identified and described according to South African National Standards code of practice
    • Personal Protective Equipment requirements are identified, explained and described as it relates to the loading/unloading of packaged goods and bulk
    • Comply with standard operating procedures and South African National Standards 10231 after loading/unloading of dangerous goods
    • Standard operating procedures are explained and described as it relates to the loading/unloading of dangerous goods
    • Relevant statutory procedures are explained and described as it relates to the loading/unloading of dangerous goods according to South African National Standards code of practice
    • Safety procedures are adhered to in the loading/unloading of dangerous goods
    • Comply with contents of operational arrangement
    • Correct documentation required by driver is identified, explained and described as required by national legislation
    • Accepted duties and responsibilities of the relevant parties to the agreement are identified and confirmed
    • Consignor, Operator, Consignee and other identified parties
    • The purpose of an operational arrangement is explained and described as it relates to the loading/unloading of dangerous goods
  • Another aspect of the increase in Dangerous Goods in our society is that the requirements for Handling and Storage of Dangerous Goods had to be looked at and specific controls put in place to protect people in the workplace as well as the environment
  • To ensure Safe Handling/Loading and Off-Loading of Loads, Identifying suitable approaches to Securing of the Loads before, during and after travel to the desired destination, Storage of Dangerous Goods and General Loads, Identification of Hazardous Chemicals using the identification of Dangerous Goods and the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, specific legislation and Codes of Practice have been put in place to control these activities
    • Regulation 277(2) of the National Road Traffic Act stipulates that companies or entities who are involved in the Handling, Storage and Transportation of Dangerous Goods must have Qualified Persons who will be responsible for these activities
