The Assessment Practitioner Skills Programme develops competencies for people interested in using assessment tools to promote learning. The programme covers assessment principles and practices, planning and conducting assessments, and workplace experience in assessing learner competence.
Course Overview
Assessment skills form the basis of many other training-related qualifications and skill sets and can lead to employability. Assessment skills enable people to monitor skills performance and provide feedback in a professional manner.
The purpose of this Skills Programme is to develop competencies for people with an interest in using assessment tools to promote learning. The programme is made up of three compulsory modules: a knowledge-based module, a practical skill module and a work experience module. The source document describes the Skills Programme as an alternative to ETDP Unit Standards.
Course Includes
- 5 days of theory and in-class assessments.
- Training hours from 08:00-16:00, including three 15-minute breaks.
- A final examination held the following day.
- Class size of 12-15 learners per facilitator.
On Successful Completion, Learners Will Be Able To
Learners will be able to plan and conduct assessments in a variety of occupational contexts to ensure that:
- Principles of good assessment practices are applied within the occupational learning framework.
- Evidence collection methods, tools and instruments are evaluated and adapted to meet contextual requirements.
- Principles of evidence collection are applied within contextual requirements.
- Assessment decisions are made and feedback formulated in accordance with accepted standards and practices.
- The domain of reflexive competence is assessed and documented.
- Documentation and records are completed and maintained in accordance with quality management system requirements.
- Past experience and prior learning are recognised during the delivery of the learning intervention.
- Physical and psychosocial safety of learners is assured.
- Learner progress and the effectiveness of the intervention are measured continuously, and feedback is provided.

Any person with work experience that enables them to observe learners in practice and make judgements on competence and quality in skills delivery.

Purpose of the Knowledge Module
The main focus of learning in this knowledge module is to build an understanding of the assessment of learner competencies in an occupational context.
The module enables learners to demonstrate an understanding of:
- Assessment practices, methods and concepts.
- Evidence collection and recording concepts and principles.
- Evidence evaluation concepts and principles.
- Assessment administration and regulatory practices.

Purpose of the Practical Skill Module
The focus of learning in this module is to provide learners with an opportunity to gain competencies related to the use of assessment documents to plan and conduct assessment of candidates against specific occupational competencies for national certification requirements.
Learners will be required to:
- Prepare for assessment.
- Conduct the assessment.
- Report and record assessments.
- Review assessments.

Purpose of the Work Experience Module
The focus of the work experience is to provide learners with an opportunity to gain exposure and experience in the assessment of a candidate in an authentic assessment environment.
Learners will be required to:
- Plan for and conduct an assessment of three candidates under the guidance of a subject matter expert.
Assessment
In-Class Assessments
The course includes theory and in-class assessments during the five-day programme.
Final Examination
The final examination is held the following day.
Horizontal Articulation
This Skills Programme articulates horizontally with the unit standard Conduct Outcomes Based Assessment (115753), NQF Level 5, 10 credits.
Completion and Certification
All learners are provided with a Training Manual.
On completion of the course, learners are provided with a Letter of Competence. The source document states that QCTO provides the official certificate.
